Balcony Vastu in Apartments: Directions and Layouts

East, North and North-East are the easy ones. Here is what to do with the South and West balconies most flats actually have.

A compass rose of the eight quarters coloured by balcony suitability, with East, North and North-East best and the South and West quarters marked as needing shade and weight.

The easy answer is East, North or North-East — those quarters get gentle low-angle morning sun, and the tradition wants them open and light in any case, so an opening there is doing what the zone wants.

The useful answer is what to do about the South and West balconies that a great many flats actually have. Those are not defects. They are shading problems, and they have shading answers.

Key points

  • East, North and North-East are the straightforward exposures.
  • A South or West balcony needs shade and weight, not a remedy.
  • Keep the North-East end of any balcony low and clear; put the heavy things at the South and West end.
  • The washing machine belongs in the North-West or South-East corner, not the North-East.
  • Above about the tenth floor, wind is the real constraint and it decides the pots.

Why the morning exposures are the good ones

Morning sun arrives at a low angle, and it is the gentlest light a balcony gets all day. By mid-afternoon the sun is high and hot, and a West-facing slab is still absorbing heat well into the evening because the masonry has been soaking it up for hours.

That is worth stating carefully, because a lot of writing on this gets the physics backwards. The heat in sunlight is the infrared part of it. Morning light is not beneficial because it carries more infrared — it is easier to live with because there is less of it, and because the angle is low enough that a modest overhang or blind does real work.

The traditional assignment lines up with that: the North-East is the quarter to keep open and lit, and an East or North-East balcony does exactly that. The dosh identification post covers how the quarters are measured.

What each exposure actually gives you

Exposure Element What the space is like What to do
North-East Water Soft morning light, cool most of the day Keep it low and clear. Low planting or nothing
East Air Direct early sun, warm by midday Seating that faces back into the light; avoid a heavy overhead
North Water Diffused, no direct sun, steady Glazing and low foliage; the easiest one to furnish
South-East Fire Morning sun then heat Fine for a utility corner — this is a service quarter
South Earth and fire Long exposure, hot for most of the day Roll-up blinds, dense pots, warm pale wall colour
South-West Earth Peak afternoon heat, holds it into the evening The heaviest things go here. Shade, stone, solid seating
West Space Hard low glare late in the day, radiant heat after Louvres or a vertical screen; the glare is the problem, not the heat alone
North-West Air Moderate, changeable, usually the windiest Secure anything light. A sound place for utilities

Two notes on that table. The North-West is the air quarter — not space, which belongs to the centre of the plan. And the element column is the quarter's own; it is not a verdict, since a balcony is a good thing to have in almost any of them.

How to zone a balcony

You do not need a named system for this. Three bands, arranged along whichever axis your slab runs:

Keep the North-East end low. Nothing tall, nothing stored. Low planting, a shallow dish of water for birds, or simply left empty. This is the one instruction that comes straight from the tradition rather than from comfort.

Keep the middle walkable. A clear route from the door to the railing. Drying racks and coffee tables in the middle of a narrow balcony are why people stop going out onto them.

Put the weight at the South and West end. Solid benches, the largest planted pots, any storage. This is the same instruction as for the inside of the flat — heavy things in the heavy quarters — and on a balcony it has the additional merit of putting the mass where the shade needs to be anyway.

The mistakes worth avoiding

Using it for storage. By some distance the most common. A balcony holding broken furniture and flattened cartons is not a balcony, and no amount of directional correction changes that.

The washing machine in the North-East corner. Heavy, vibrating, draining, in the quarter that is supposed to be the lightest and cleanest part of the plan. Plumbing usually constrains the choice, but where there is one, the North-West or South-East corner is the better place.

Artificial green walls on a North or East railing. They block the morning light that is the entire reason those exposures are good, and they collect dust. Spaced real planters let light through.

Leaving a high balcony bare. Above the tenth floor or so a bare slab is unusable on a windy day. Heavy grouped pots fix that and are the standard recommendation anyway.

Materials and colour

Light, matt, natural surfaces: terracotta, light sandstone, matt porcelain. Avoid dark polished stone on a South or West balcony — it absorbs heat all afternoon and radiates it back into the room behind, which you will feel at nine in the evening.

For furniture, solid teak or powder-coated metal stands up to a hot exposure; cane and rattan are better on a shaded North or East one. For walls, pale neutrals — ivory, soft beige, pale green — bounce daylight back into the flat.

On objects sold specifically as balcony remedies: wind chimes, hanging crystals and the rest are modern additions to the practice rather than classical prescriptions. We have set out what that category of object is and is not. Hang one because you like it.

Five things you can do this afternoon

  1. Clear everything off and put back only what you use.
  2. Move the heaviest items to the South or West end of the slab.
  3. Turn the chair you actually sit in so you face North or East.
  4. Swap harsh white outdoor floodlights for warm fixtures around 2700K to 3000K.
  5. Put a shallow dish of fresh water at the North-East end, and change it daily.

When it is worth asking

Do it yourself if the slab is a normal rectangle and the job is decluttering, planting and furniture. That is nearly every balcony.

It is worth a consultation when a South-West balcony is genuinely overheating the room behind it and you want the shading, glazing and interior finishes decided together, or when a wraparound balcony spans two quarters and you want the transition handled deliberately. Frequently Asked Questions

Kya washing machine balcony par rakh sakte hain?
Haan, rakh sakte hain. North-West ya South-East kona behtar hai. North-East kone mein na rakhein — us hisse ko halka, khaali aur saaf rakhna hota hai, aur bhaari machine wahan uska ulta karti hai. Plumbing jahan hai wahi asli bandish hai, toh jo option mile unmein se North-West chunein.
Is a South-facing balcony bad in Vastu?
No. A South or South-West balcony gets the most afternoon heat, and that is a real, measurable problem with a real answer — shade it, weight it, and use heavy unglazed pots that hold moisture. It does not need a remedy in the metaphysical sense. It needs a blind.
Kya balcony ko glass se band karna theek hai?
Theek hai, lekin socha-samjha hona chahiye. North aur East mein saaf glass rakhein taaki subah ki roshni andar aaye. South aur West mein tinted ya low-E glass aur andar blinds lagayein, warna woh hissa garmi ka box ban jaata hai. Yaad rakhein ki balcony band karne ke liye society ki ijazat aksar zaroori hoti hai.
Which plants should I avoid on a balcony?
The tradition advises against thorny plants and those with milky sap near a living space, and in a narrow balcony there is a practical case too — they catch people. Beyond that, choose what will survive the exposure. On a hot West balcony that means tough, drought-tolerant species; on a shaded North one it means shade-tolerant ones.
Do wind chimes actually do anything?
A wind chime is a twentieth-century addition to Vastu practice rather than something the classical texts prescribe, and we would rather say so. If you like the sound, hang one. We would not present it as a correction for a directional problem, and we have written separately about that whole category of object.
What changes on a high floor?
Wind, mostly. Above roughly the tenth floor a balcony gets enough of it that light pots blow over and plants dry out faster than you expect. Use wide, heavy, unglazed containers, group them rather than spacing them out, and do not put anything on the railing itself.
